Kimball basketball boys fall to No. 1 BBE

Tuesday night?Äôs 70-43 loss to number-one ranked Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa was not unexpected, but it was a closer game than the score indicated. The South Sub-Section 5A championship game in Little Falls actually had the third-seeded Cubs leading by a point just before half. But the top-rated Jaguars would have none of it, stringing together a 10-0 run to close out the first session and post a 34-25 advantage. BBE went on a 10-0 run to end the half because of a few turnovers and a quick shot. In the second half, BBE scored the first four points to gain a double-digit lead. With just more than 12 minutes to play, BBE led by 14 when they decided to pull the ball out and stall, forcing the Cubs out of their defense.

?ÄúThe gym was so loud I could not communicate to my team to stay in their defense and rest before one final push against the number one team in the state. When we came out of our defense BBE went on another run to widen the margin,?Äù coach Jay Klein said. Kimball did a great job of frustrating BBE early in the game and hanging with the top-ranked Jaguars. If not for that late run in the first half, the second half may have been a lot different. Merchant had 13 points and seven rebounds to lead Kimball. VonWahlde finished with

11 points and seven boards, while Hennen rallied for 7 points. Hunt had 4 points, Serbus had 2, and Spaulding had 6, to complete the Cubs?Äô scoring.

?ÄúWe shot the ball well, but just turned it over too much. I was very proud of the run we made in the playoffs. This was the first time in 30 years that Kimball has been this far in the playoffs. We have a lot to look forward to heading into next year,?Äù added coach Klein.
