Watkins EDA seeks public suggestions

Last fall, the Watkins EDA (Economic Development Authority) board sent out a survey to the Watkins community. We received several responses with feedback and a number of very good ideas (summarized below).

The city has begun to respond to some of these suggestions: street lights are being replaced and some new ones installed to improve lighting in darker areas of town; a map book of properties in town is being prepared; and the city, council, and EDA continue their efforts to bring more people and business into town in order to help stimulate the economy and lower taxes for everyone.

Another opportunity is coming up for the community to discuss their ideas on improving the town. Another visioning session will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at City Hall in Watkins.

Here is a summary of what was brought up by local residents last fall. We welcome additions and further comment at the April 8 visioning session.

?Ä¢ Strengths: The people of Watkins are hard-working, honest, friendly and helpful. They are always willing to lend a helping hand, be it through one of the many volunteer organizations or through fundraisers for others in time of need. The community has grocery stores, restaurants, and mechanics for convenience and located on the highway close to town.

?Ä¢ Suggested improvements: It is important to keep properties clean and inviting. There should be an initiative to clean up yards and homes in town. Main street also should be kept up so the buildings appear welcoming. A good way to grow a community is to create an industrial park. The city should know what lands are around town, who owns them, what the cost would be, etc., and have plans to bring industry into town. There are dark spots in town that can use better street lighting.

?Ä¢ Opportunities: Swimming pool, strong faith community, job opportunities, outstanding school system and nursing home, possible tourism opportunities.

?Ä¢ Vision for future: Walking trails, splash pad, affordable housing, promote industry and new business.
