Cubs?Äô baseball in full swing

post-winning week

Despite another wet start, the Cubs managed to fit in three games last week. Traveling to Holdingford Thursday, May 1, for a conference double header, the Kimball crew came off the bus ready to play, cruising to an 8-1 opening game win. Mathias Hennen got the start and pitched all six innings, yielding five hits, one walk, an earned run, and striking out four, en route to his second win of the year. The Cubs?Äô eight-hit, six-walk offensive attack was led by Hennen, who went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI. Teammate Luke Merten posted an admirable 2 for 3, 2 RBI-day, while Joey VonWahlde, Brandon Loch, and Jarred Merchant each contributed a hit in the assault.

Game two was a complete role reversal, as the Huskers gave the home town faithful something to cheer about. The Cubs?Äô bats slipped into an early hibernation, as they picked up just three hits in the 10-0 Holdingford victory. VonWahlde pounded out a couple of hits, going 2 for 3, and Merten claimed the Cubs other hit, going 1 for 2. The Cubs?Äô defense was not as strong as usual behind starting pitcher VonWahlde, as they committed four errors that led to six unearned runs.

Friday, May 2, the Cubs hosted a fellow sub-section 5A opponent, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg. Kimball dominated the game, winning 14-4, in a five-inning contest, shortened by the 10-run-rule. Cameron Hunt picked up his second win of the year, pitching all five innings. The Cubs batted through the order in both the bottom of the second and third innings, scoring five and six runs respectively. VonWahlde again had multiple hits, going 3 for 4 from the leadoff spot and registering 2 RBI. Hennen continued to swing a hot stick, picking up three more hits and going 3 for 4, with two doubles and four RBI. Through six games this year, Hennen is batting an impressive .571, with five doubles and nine RBI. Merten went 2 for 2; Hunt, Loch, and Hunter Schreifels picked up the Cubs?Äô three remaining hits.

With just over two weeks remaining before playoffs begin, the Cubs will try and squeeze in 11 more conference games, in an attempt to improve on their current 4-2 record.
