Cubs get lots of action as season winds down

The Kimball Cubs?Äô baseball team managed to get in five games last week. First up was a doubledip with visiting Maple Lake, followed by a twin bill at Elrosa, vs. B-B-E, and finally back home for a battle with Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted.

Game one against Maple Lake was controlled by the Irish. The Cubs managed just three hits, while the Irish put up 13 on way to a 14-1 victory. The Cubs?Äô three hits were by Joe VonWahlde, Mitch Klein, and Brady Faber.

The Cubs came out swinging in the nightcap, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first, only to see Maple Lake answer back with 4 in the bottom half. The Cubs were never able to regain the lead, but kept the game close the whole way, losing 11-8. Eight different Cubs had hits in the 11-team total. Brandon Loch led the way, going 3 for 4 and Cameron Hunt went 2 for 3 with an RBI double. Faber and Jarred Merchant both had two RBI.

Errors were the deciding factor in the effort vs. B-B-E. The Cubs committed four errors that led to four unearned runs for the Jaguars. In the opener, with two outs in the last inning, the Cubs had bases loaded, down by three. Senior Ben Serbus hit a deep fly ball to the left-center gap, for a game-tying double, but the Cubs weren?Äôt able to hold, dropping a tough one, 9-8.

In the finale, the Cubs fell behind 3-0 through three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Kimball scored four runs on a two-RBI single by Loch and a pair of defensive miscues by B-B-E.  The Cubs added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to another Jags?Äô boot. Hunt pitched all six innings to pick up the 5-3 win. He allowed six hits, walked two, gave up three runs (one earned), and struck out four.

Closing out the week, the Cubs looked to avenge an 8-1 loss earlier this year to the HL-W-W Lakers, but it wasn?Äôt to be. The Cubs were able to out hit their opponents but walks and errors were the difference in the 5-3 Jaguar victory. Will Spaulding got his first varsity start and gave up one hit through three and one-third innings, giving up four runs (two earned), striking out two, but walking eight. Quentin Berres came on in relief in his first varsity pitching appearance and gave up one hit, one run (zero earned) and walked one. VonWahlde led the way at the plate going 3-4 and scored two of the Cubs?Äô runs. Hunt went 2 for 2 with a walk; Serbus 2 for 4; and Merchant 1-2.

By week?Äôs end, the Cubs?Äô record had fallen to 6-9 overall and 3-9 in the conference. They have two more regular season games Tuesday, when they host Pierz, and playoffs begin Friday.
