Meeker County youth celebrate National 4-H Week Oct. 5-11

More than 6 million young people across the country will be celebrating National 4-H Week, which will take place Oct. 5-11. Meeker County 4-H uses National 4-H Week to celebrate the great things that the 4-H youth development program offers young people and to highlight the incredible young people who work each day to make a positive impact on their community.

During 4-H week, local clubs will create window displays at local schools and business throughout the county that promoted 4-H. Local 4-H youth, volunteers, and staff will also connect with their communities by visiting third grade students across the county to share their enthusiasm and passion for 4-H. Meeker County 4-H Ambassadors will also be featured on newsmaker on KLFD radio, AM 1410, on Monday, Oct. 6. Listen for daily 4-H school and radio announcements. All of these activities will expose potential new audiences to our wonderful program and also help develop leadership skills in our young people. We will end our 4-H Week celebrations with our annual awards celebration held on Oct. 12.

?ÄúWhat I have gained most from being involved in 4-H is lasting friendships. I have met many families who I otherwise would not have ever met. We have a special bond in doing service projects together.?Äù said Meeker County 4-H Volunteer, Marcia Dischinger.

Research has proven that participation in 4-H has a significant positive impact on young people. Recent findings from the Tufts University 4-H Study of Positive Youth Development indicate that, when compared to their peers, young people in 4-H are:

?Ä¢ Nearly four times more likely to contribute to their communities,

?Ä¢ Two times more likely to pursue healthy behaviors like, and

?Ä¢ Two times more likely to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) programs in the out-of-school time.

In Meeker County, more than 350 4-H members and 100 volunteers are involved in 4?ÄëH. For more information about the Meeker county 4-H Program, contact Darcy Cole, County 4-H Program Coordinator, at (320)
