Express drop a pair of one-run games

It was another rough weekend for the Kimball Express as it dropped one-run games to two Central Valley League foes.

The Express lost 7-6 Saturday at home to the Cold Spring Rockies, 7-6, before dropping another close contest Sunday, this time to Watkins 3-2.

The four consecutive losses were all by one run and put the Express at 6-5 on the season and 4-3 in the Central Valley League North standings.

?ÄúSure it hurts knowing those four games could have gone either way,?Äù Express manager Tom Marquardt said. ?ÄúBut I give our guys credit for battling through this tough stretch. We?Äôre still sorting out some fielding positions, batting orders and pitching rotations. This week will be interesting to say the least, we?Äôll be missing eight guys for our upcoming Highway 55 Tourney hosted in Kimball and Maple Lake.?Äù

Against the Clippers the Express faced old nemesis Matt Geislinger. Usually the Express could get to the hard-throwing left hander by showing patience. But on this day Geislinger and the Clippers got the better of the Express, who saw their losing streak extend to four games.

The Clippers started the game by  jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead off Kimball starter Zach Dingmann. The Express got those runs back, one in the bottom of the first, and one an inning later. But when the Clippers scored a long run in the top of the third, no one could have known that that would be all the scoring for the rest of the contest. Both pitchers settled down, yet both offenses had opportunities but couldn?Äôt capitalize. Both teams left 10 runners on base.

Geislinger picked up the win, throwing nine innings allowing seven hits, three walks, and striking out nine.

Zach Dingmann took the loss going six innings. He allowed seven hits, three runs, two of them earned, and struck out six. Andy Dingmann threw an inning of relief, and Ben Johnson tossed the final two frames.

Offensively, the top three hitters for the Express collected six of the team?Äôs seven hits. Brooks and Scott Marquardt and Adam Beyer each collected a pair of hits for the Express.

Kevin Kramer had a big day at the dish for Watkins going 3-for-5, and Adam Hiltner was 1-for-5 with two RBI.

On Saturday, June 6, against the Rockies, Cold Spring scored seven runs in the seventh inning to sink the Express, who were holding a three-run lead at the time. The Express did respond with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 7-6, but that was where it would stay.

Matt Dingmann started for the Express and went 6 1/3 innings, giving up four runs. Andy Dingman would finish the seventh but not before giving up three runs and being tagged with the loss. Zach Kuefler pitched the last two innings for the Express to keep the game close.

Jordan Joseph swung a hot bat for Kimball, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Winter was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Adam Beyer and Brooks Marquardt each collected a pair of hits.
