LuAnn Marschel, Renee Berscheid, Jeanne Schmidt, Dori Hamilton, Colette Van Vleet, Carol Santone-Royal and Barb Hopewell, as members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 261 of Kimball, attended the 86th Fall Conference held Oct. 26-27, 2018 in Marshall, Minn. It was hosted by the Marshall American Legion Family Post #113. The Auxiliary Conference was held at the Ramada Inn Conference Center in Marshall.
State President Jean Walker was the presiding officer. Her Department President’s Project this year is collecting $25,000 to create Patriots Park at the Minnesota Veterans Home Fergus Falls. It will have benches, bushes, and vines growing over the pergolas, a dock, and a monument with matching granite benches. The monument will have three soldiers and the motto: “No one left behind,” with the emblems of all the branches of service. A leadership conference was held on Thursday evening prior to the conference.
Throughout the conference, the department chairmen presented their programs for this year. “Just Ask,” sessions gave the membership the opportunity to ask questions on the various programs.
Others addressing the conference were Ella Doyale and Lisa Faairbairn, the Girls Nation Senators. These young ladies told about their trip to Washington, D.C. We also heard from Melany Butler representing the Eagle’s Healing Nest. There weren’t too many dry eyes in attendance by the time she finished her speech. The Eagle’s Healing Nest is where veterans can go who need healing from PTSD, drugs, and alcohol, and depression.
There’s an Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre and Anoka.
On Friday, a silent auction was held with proceeds going to the Auxiliary Emergency Fund program. A total of $6,426 was raised.
At the conference, Dori Hamilton and Colette Van Vleet passed out flyers for DeeDee Buckley who is a candidate for the Department of Minnesota for Northwestern Division National Vice President 2020-2021. Renee Berscheid and Carol Santone-Royal advanced and retired the Sixth District’s flags for the Conference and LuAnn Marschel served as sergeant-at-arms for the Conference.
