U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Habitat Day 2019

The Litchfield Wetland Management District of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will host “Habitat Day 2019” from 12-4 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in Litchfield. The event has a variety of offerings for all ages who are interested in wildlife and habitat in our area. This event is free.

We are excited to announce the program for this year’s Habitat Day event. The Raptor Centerthrough the University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine will host their Raptors of Minnesota presentation at 12:30 p.m. This program uses a variety of live birds of prey native to our state and will educate the public about them and their role in the environment. After the presentation, the Raptor Center will host a meet-and-greet table with open discussion from 1:45-3:45 p.m. Be sure to enjoy them both.

Spring is just around the corner and it won’t be long before wood ducks and bluebirds return to the area in search of nesting sites. If you have good habitat areas for placing nest boxes for these species, free, pre-cut bird house kits will be available for assembly on site (one of each per family). Bat boxes and robin nesting shelves will also be available while supplies last. All necessary tools to assemble the houses will be provided. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to assist with construction. Information packets will be provided for nest house placement. Design plans will be available to build these houses on your own. Come build a house anytime between 12-4 p.m.

Coloring books, posters, and an assortment of wildlife related materials and educational displays for all ages will be available throughout the afternoon. Special guests at the event include the Wildlife Wizard, who will quiz people on local wildlife and their habitats, as well as Pheasants Forever, Inc., Crow River Organization of Water, and FWS Partners Program who will have staffed booths.
