On March 25 the Kimball boys’ basketball program held their end-season banquet at Kimball Area High School. A potluck meal was served for the players, their parents and the coaching staff. Awards were handed out, as coaches reflected on their seasons.
This past year the varsity team finished the season with a record of 11 wins and 16 losses overall. Kimball had a record of 5-9 in the Central Minnesota Conference, finishing in seventh place. Kimball was the number 14 seed in Section 6AA for the playoffs. The Cubs lost in the first round to St. Cloud Cathedral (55-41). It was the first time in seven years that the boy’s team lost in the first round of the playoffs. Kimball also won their Holiday Tournament for the third straight season.
There were 17 players on the varsity team this past year. Members of the team included: letter winners (seniors) Donnie Frilstad, Casey Gohmann, Drew Gustafson, Noah Jurek, Riley Miller, Thomas Pearson, Zack Streit and Jake Traurig, letter winners (juniors) Brian Binsfeld, Chase Gustafson, and Noah Young, and sophomore letter winner Jack Knaus. Other team members included: (junior) Tyler Stang and (sophomores) Riley Albers, Hunter Hickman, Logan Silbernagel and Simon Stang.
A number of awards were given out the night of the banquet. The Cubs had two players named to the Central Minnesota All-Conference Team. Drew Gustafson and Noah Jurek were first team all-conference. The Offensive MVP Award went to Drew Gustafson. Defensive MVP went to Drew Gustafson. Simon Stang was named Most Improved Player. Noah Young received the Hustle Award and Jake Traurig was awarded the Team Spirit Award. Kimball had two players named Central Minnesota Conference Player of the Week during the season, Noah Jurek and Drew Gustafson. Casey Gohmann received Academic All-Conference honors.
Two Kimball seniors will be participating in All-Star games. Drew Gustafson and Noah Jurek will be participating in the Central Minnesota Conference All Star Game which will take place at St. Cloud Cathedral on April 6. Drew Gustafson will also be participating in the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Series on March 29 and 30. Games will be played at St. Cloud State University and Macalester College.
The basketball banquet put the finishing touches on the Cubs’ season for the Kimball boys’ basketball program. All the coaches would like to thank the players, the player’s parents, everyone who helped with the program.
