Express tip Lakers, 10-1

By Jean Doran Matua, Editor

It was an ideal afternoon for baseball, especially for the Express Saturday, June 1. They scored early and maintained a comfortable lead until the 10-1 finish.

That moment when you realize it’s a home run. Adam Beyer hit a home run for the Express in the bottom of the second inning that also scored Cade and Scott Marquardt for Kimball’s sixth run of the 10-1 game. Staff photo by Jean Doran Matua.

Manager Tom Marquardt was pleased to finally be playing after several weeks of games called for rain. He welcomes several new players to the roster. Pitcher Max Koprek joins the Express from the Sartell Muskies. He played college baseball for Itasca Community College and the University of Valley City in North Dakota. Max will help strengthen our already experienced pitching staff. And Paul Jacobson is a 2018 Annandale High School graduate currently enrolled at Central Lakes Community College in Brainerd. Paul looks to be a good athlete who can play many different positions.

Zak Wallner earned the win for the Express with five innings on the mound; he struck out 8, walked 2, and allowed 3 hits. Max Koprek pitched three in relief, allowing the only Lakers run, and Nick Gustafson finished the game.

Mitch Wieneke was tagged with the loss allowing 3 runs on 3 hits in the first two-thirds of the first inning. Wieneke was replaced after he was hit in the elbow. Justin Kunkel pitched five and two-thirds innings, allowing 7 runs on 9 hits. Chandler Bacom pitched the final one and two-thirds innings; he allowed only one hit, and he walked 1 and struck out 1.

Adam Beyer lead the hitting for Kimball with a homerun in the second that also plated Cade and Scott Marquardt; he had a total of 5 RBI on the day on two hits, the other being a single. Scott Marquardt crossed the plate 3 times and batted a double RBI. Cade Marquardt scored twice and  was 4-for-5 at the plate with four singles. Matt Dingmann had
2 singles in 4 at-bats. Zach Dingmann had 2 RBI on a single. Paul Jacobson also had 1 RBI on a single. The Express had no errors on the game.

For the Lakers, Max Fuchs and Chadd Kunkel each hit a double; singles were batted by Mitch Wieneke, Justin Kunkel, Andy Linn, Ryan Heslop, and Chandler Bacom. Their only run was scored by Ryan Heslop on a double to left field by Max Fuchs in the seventh inning.
