Clippers hammer Hawks July 20

What can one say about a shut-out game that ends at 21-0 in six and a half innings? Ouch!

Clippers Dan Berg slides safely home in the fifth inning, right on the heels of Lincoln Haugen, scoring the 17th and 18th runs for Watkins in their 21-0 clobbering of Eden Valley Saturday evening, July 20. Staff photos by Jean Doran Matua.

Absence because of injury among the Hawks lineup may cushion the blow somewhat, but it can’t remove the sting. The Hawks managed only three hits in the whole game, while the Clippers scored more runs than they had hits.
Dan Berg started for the Clippers, throwing 6 innings; he allowed 2 hits while striking out 7 and giving the Hawks their only walk on the game. Dustin Kramer finished the last inning, striking out 2 and allowing the Hawks’ third hit.
Stephen Pennertz is saddled with the loss, allowing 9 hits in the first inning alone; he was replaced in the third, after another Clippers run. Relief pitchers allowed another 11 runs before it was all over.
At bat, the Clippers seemed almost unstoppable. No one hit more than a double, yet they scored 21 runs on only 19 hits. Berg crossed home plate 5 times, Haugen 4 times, Kevin Kramer and Ashton 3 times each, Matt Geislinger and Carter Block twice each, and Carson Geislinger and Reese Jansen once.
Alex Geislinger led the Hawks with two singles (two-thirds of the team’s hits); David Pennertz also hit a single. Two runners made it to second in the game – Alex Geislinger and Tanner Olean – but that was the furthest they got.

With this loss Saturday, and their subsequent loss Sunday to Pearl Lake, the Eden Valley Hawks have ended their 2019 season.
