The Watkins Clippers are still alive in the Region 11C amateur baseball tournament after defeating Big Lake, 4-3, and losing to Sartell, 5-4.
On Saturday morning, Aug. 3, just as the Kraut N Wurst parade was in full swing back in Watkins, the Watkins Clippers took on the Big Lake YellowJackets in Sartell. The two teams seemed evenly matched, and were tied at 3 from the fourth inning on – until Carter Block’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth put them over the top. The Clippers won their first Region 11C game of 2019, 4-3.
Matt Geislinger earned the win for the Clippers, allowing three runs on six hits over nine innings; he also struck out one.
Carson Geislinger hit a solo home run for the Clippers in the fourth inning to tie the score for the last half of the game; he also hit a double. Kevin Kramer and Dan Berg each hit a double and a single.
By contrast, the Sunday afternoon game Aug. 4 was relatively slow. The Clippers faced the Sartell Muskies. That game was tied at 2 from the fourth inning through the eighth when Sartell pulled ahead by 1. In the top of the ninth, Sartell scored 3, then the Clippers countered with 3 – Sartell won, 5-4.
Lincoln Haugen and Kevin Kramer each hit a double; Kramer hit a pair of singles as well.
See remaining games listed below. A new Region 11C champion will emerge Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11. The top four teams from Region 11C will advance to the State Tournament that begins Aug. 17. State games will be played in Delano and Maple Lake. Still “in” from the Central Valley League are the Watkins Clippers, Cold Spring Rockies, and Luxemburg Brewers.
