Storms moved into Minnesota on Saturday evening and brought with them severe weather to parts of the region. This was due to a fairly strong cold front and low pressure system that moved out of the Dakotas.
In Kandiyohi County, two men had their sailboat overturned by strong winds. Officials say that a thunderstorm moved through and reportedly flipped the sailboat on Big Kandiyohi Lake. One man was able to swim about a mile to shore to get help for the other man. The two men are reportedly safe following the incident.
In both Douglas County and Swift County, fairgoers headed for shelter Saturday night as thunderstorms and heavy rain moved across the area. This shut down the rides and the midway for a time.
These storms had a history of 60 mph winds and large hail in portions of South Dakota and into parts of west central and southern Minnesota at times.
Drier weather moved in by Sunday as high pressure settled into the state. Dew points were very low on Sunday with temperatures in the low to mid 70s.
We will see rain chances returning Friday into Saturday as a couple of weak shortwaves will slide across the state. Temperatures will be near average for this time of the year.
Enjoy these late summer days.
Weather history: On this date in 1918, National Weather Service records show that “the third-deadliest tornado” struck the community of Tyler. It reportedly destroyed the “downtown area, leaving 36 dead.”
Weather facts: Did you know that “not all tornadoes are visible?” Their high wind speeds and rapid rotation often “form a visible funnel of condensed water.”
