Ethelyn Hilsgen of Watkins died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2019, at Hilltop Health Care Center in Watkins. She was 88.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins with Fr. Aaron Nett officiating. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery. Visitation is from 4-8 p.m. Monday, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anthony Parish Center.
Ethelyn Ann “Ethel” Donnay was born March 8, 1931, in Watkins to Nicholas and Frances (Schreifels) Donnay. She was united in marriage to Paul Hilsgen Feb. 9, 1952, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Watkins. They lived in Watkins, and Ethel was employed as a nursing assistant and housekeeper at Hilltop Health Care Center for 15 years. She was a lifelong member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, and a member of the Wat-Kim-Valley VFW Post 5460 Auxiliary. Her hobbies included gardening, canning, sewing, and upholstery. She always had a jigsaw puzzle on the kitchen table, and she enjoyed watching game shows and old Westerns and sitcoms. Ethel especially enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul in 2002, son-in-law Allan “Frizz” Unterberger, daughter-in-law Karlene Hilsgen; grandchildren Andrew and Jamie, great-grandchildren McKenzie and George, plus four great-great-grandchildren in infancy, brothers Marcus Donnay and Gerald Donnay, and sister Barbara Kalkbrenner.
She is survived by her children Paul Hilsgen Jr. of Sauk Rapids, David (and Carol) Hilsgen of Ellsworth, Wis., Lloyd (and special friend Stacy) Hilsgen of Austin, Texas, Linda (and Charlie) Schmitz of Sauk Rapids, Joyce (and Pat) Ruhland of Brooklyn Park, Gary (and special friend Dottie) Hilsgen of St. Cloud, Jeffrey (and Julie) Hilsgen of Watkins, Susan Unterberger of Watkins, Joseph Hilsgen of Sauk Rapids, Patricia (and Scott) Ashburn of New London, and Daniel Hilsgen of Watkins; 32 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; sisters Evelyn (and Richard) Decker of Cold Spring, Betty (and Harold) Kelm of Eden Valley, MaryAnn (and Roman) Stommes of Cold Spring, Teresa (and Don) Hetwer of Buffalo; and sister-in-law Lucy Donnay of Wadena.
