Celebrating our son’s first year while in lockdown during a global pandemic an ocean away from our family – suffice to say, it’s not exactly what we had envisioned for his birthday.
As parents and expats in London, our kids have taught us a lot about creating our own sense of adventure. Their imagination and ability to find joy in simple activities has helped us preserve our sanity during these unprecedented times.
Despite cancelling our kids’ birthday party, shuttered businesses, and locks on the playground gates, we had a lovely day together for Augustin’s first birthday (our daughter turns 4 this week). There was a wagon ride through the park, a balloon dance party in our living room, and baking the baby’s first cake.
The day was a great reminder to us to take advantage of this time. We have the easiest job at the moment, we are being asked to stay home to keep ourselves and others safe. And we are lucky enough to do it with hilarious small humans who will never be this small again.
