Birthdays for Baylie Winter have been rough the past couple of years. Two years ago, her beloved grandfather Elmer Haag died on her birthday. Last year, her grandmother’s funeral was on her birthday. This year … COVID-19 and self-isolation.
Baylie’s mom Kelly is part of the South Haven Fire Department. She’s actually the only woman in the department. So, it was natural that the department would be called into service for a drive-by birthday celebration for Baylie on her golden birthday (12th birthday on May 12).
Not only did all the trucks head out for the drive-by of the Winter home, but dozens of friends and family in their own vehicles as well. Some delivered balloons and presents, some threw out treats from their cars. All made quite a racket in the process.
And it was a total surprise for Baylie who was just out in the front yard tossing a ball with her dad when the first truck rounded the corner up the block, blaring its sirens.
So, happy golden birthday, Baylie! We trust that this one will be quite a memorable birthday. And we hope the fun of this one makes up for some of the sadness of the last two.
