A heat wave continued to impact Minnesota over the 4th of July weekend. Temperatures were about 10 degrees above average in most locations over the weekend.
Portions of Minnesota had a heat advisory both days as temperatures were in the lower 90s with high humidity, making it feel more like 100 degrees at times.
Showers and thunderstorms developed on Sunday afternoon across northern Minnesota and spread into central and west central areas Sunday night into Monday. This was associated with a cold front that pushed out of the Dakotas.
Another disturbance will push across the area on Wednesday. This will bring another good chance for showers and thunderstorms through Wednesday night. Dew points on Wednesday will reach the mid- to upper-60s.
The heat and humidity are projected to stay with us into this upcoming weekend. Highs will continue to be in the mid- to upper-80s through Sunday. However, dew points are expected to fall into the lower 60s making it feel slightly more comfortable.
A stray shower or thunderstorm can’t be ruled out over the weekend; however, at this stage, it looks to be mainly dry.
Weather history: On this date in 1974 the region had an intense heat wave. The Twin Cities hit 101 degrees F which was the warmest temperature in 26 years.
Weather facts: A heat wave is a “prolonged period of abnormally hot weather.” It can be accompanied by high humidity making for very uncomfortable weather conditions.
